Original Madras Trading Co. Long Sleeve Madras Check Shirt Olive / Red

£120.00

Established in New York in the 1970’s, the Original Madras Trading Company began by supplying Madras checks and Indian textiles to some of the most renowned names in American clothing. Now, operating out of the same building in New York City’s garment district, this third-generation family business has created its own collection of button-down shirts using their authentic handwoven Madras.

These shirts are made using single weaver cloth hand woven on a handloom.  Single weaver cloth means fabric that is woven by one individual weaver from start to finish using a completely manual handloom.

It takes a master handloom weaver 2-3 hours to weave one metre of fabric depending on the complexity of the pattern. That means that on average weaving by handloom is 30 to 40 times slower than ordinary machine loom.  This massive production limitation is the reason for hand weaving being so extremely rare today, and allows the weavers to achieve the inherent quality found in the craftsmanship of handwoven fabric.
